Music from New Spain. La Grande Bande, an ensemble of professional orchestral and vocal specialists in the Baroque period, conducted by founder Michael Asmus, will present music written by Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, the music director of the Basílica Catedral Metropolitana in Puebla, México from 1628 until 1664. This is a not to be missed opportunity to hear 90 minutes of grand, indigenous, Mexican Sacred Music in Our Lady’s Shrine.

We are very pleased that a pre-concert lecture will be given via Zoom by Dr. Luisa Vilar-Payá, the preeminent scholar of the Puebla Cathedral’s musical life, from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Puebla, México. She will discuss the music to be heard that evening, thereby deepening our appreciation and enjoyment of the music.

The Shrine will remain open all day. Cart rides will be available for those needing assistance.
