Local convention brings together gamers from around the region.
The gaming convention, Coulee Con, returns Friday, August 24, through Sunday, August 26 at the La Crosse Center. The convention, which features board games, collectible card games, role playing games, tabletop miniatures, video games, and puzzles, is in its fourth year with an anticipated attendance of 600. Friday and Saturday feature tournaments, preplanned games, a silent auction, table vendors, and an artist alley. Sunday adds a focus on families and fundraising with reduced admission and family-focused events including big versions of games and a cosplay contest.
New events for the 2018 show include a qualifier for the Catan United States Championship Tournament, the Paradigm Grand Prix Video Game tournament, and a protospiel event where game designers can test their prototypes. Building on the success of 2017, the con will also have expanded miniature tournaments on Saturday, an enlarged play-to-win library with over 60 unique titles, and even more artists and table vendors.
For 2018, Coulee Con has partnered with the nonprofits Extra Life, Weirdcards Charitable Club, and the La Crosse County Veterans Service Office to raise money in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and area veterans.
Tickets can be purchased online or on-site. Weekend passes are $35. One-day passes for Friday ($15) and Saturday ($20) are also available. A Sunday family pass will be available on-site for $10 per family (two adults, four children). Passes for individuals on Sunday are $5.
Major sponsors for the convention are Explore La Crosse, Hammered Game Tables, Apex Hobby Shop, River City Hobbies, Clairemont Comics and Games, Daily Magic Games, Universal Horizons, and The Game Crafter.
