One of the greatest advantages of downtown La Crosse is its walkability. Many attractions, shops, and restaurants are within easy walking distance of each other, making it convenient to explore on foot. This pedestrian-friendly adventure is a great way to check out downtown La Crosse and what it has to offer.

Destinations

Explore the garden and riverside trail before heading over to see the shops, the historic buildings along Main Street and Pearl Street, and their colorful Artists’ Alley.

Riverside Park

The adventure will start at Riverside Park. Riverside Park is a public park that stretches across the Mississippi River with green space to hang out when the weather is nice. At the park, there’s also a free International Friendship Garden that represents the countries of La Crosse’s seven sister cities and has decorative outdoor nature displays. You can park your car here and walk to the remaining stops or drive to the next stop from here. PC @goingandexploring

Downtown La Crosse

A few blocks from Riverside Park is the historic downtown area of La Crosse. You can explore the shops, art galleries, and historic buildings along Main Street and Pearl Street. I recommend stopping by The Pearl Ice Cream Parlour, a nostalgic 1930s-style shop selling ice cream and other sweets. If you’re looking for a souvenir, Drift Mercantile sells locally made gifts. Big Al’s Pizza

After exploring downtown, walk over to Big Al’s Pizza. The restaurant is decorated with Americana, vintage ads, and a 1959 Cadillac and it offers indoor and outdoor dining. The menu includes appetizers, cheesy dippers, artisan pinsas, deep dish and specialty pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. I recommend the Caprese Pinsa. PC @goingandexploring

Artist Alley

After eating, stop by Artists’ Alley, which is a short walk from Big Al’s Pizza. However, you can drive here and park on the street if you’d like. The alley showcases street art, including murals, graffiti, and installations. Those who visit Artists’ Alley can stroll through the alley at their own pace, admiring the artwork and taking photos of the vibrant murals. PC @goingandexploring
