The Root River is once again open for paddling and tubing in the Lanesboro and Whalan area following the heavy rains that brought high water in early July.
As water levels receded, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails crews assessed the river and cleared logjams that had created hazards along the popular recreation corridor from Lanesboro to Whalan. With those obstructions removed and conditions improving, visitors and residents can once again enjoy tubing, kayaking and canoeing on the Root River in Lanesboro and Whalan.
“We are excited to welcome people back to the river,” said Joe Goetzke, executive director of the Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce. “We greatly appreciate the work of DNR Parks and Trails staff to inspect the route and clear the hazards so visitors can return to one of the experiences that makes summer in Lanesboro and Whalan so special.”
River users should continue to follow all DNR river safety guidelines and remain alert for debris or other conditions that may have changed during the high waters. Water levels and currents can change without warning, so visitors are encouraged to check current conditions and contact their chosen outfitter before beginning a trip.
Those bringing their own equipment can use designated public river accesses located in Lanesboro and Whalan. Visitors needing tubes, kayaks, canoes, equipment or shuttle service can find local outfitters and additional trip-planning information at lanesboro.com or by calling the Lanesboro Visitor Center at 507-467-2696.
This announcement follows earlier updates confirming that the Root River State Bike Trail has also reopened for recreation, allowing visitors to once again enjoy both the river and trail during their visit.
