I take the occasion to inform you that I have recently finished a new book about the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at La Crosse, Wisconsin. The writing and publication of the book has brought me great joy because, in its pages, I explain my own history and experience growing up in Wisconsin in a devout Catholic family, attending seminary during the Second Vatican Council, and experiencing the radical change in the daily life of the Church afterward, specifically in what regards the devotional life of families. The project of building the Shrine began after I was installed as the Bishop of La Crosse on February 22, 1995. Now, almost twenty years later, the book on the Shrine looks back not only on the development of the Shrine but also presents the Shrine’s critical mission today. The book gives testimony to the great spiritual need for the Shrine as it is manifest in the lives of some 100,000 pilgrims who come on pilgrimage to the Shrine each year.

The book is titled The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and is available for pre-order on August 22, the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. It will be officially released on October 7, the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. If you are coming to the Shrine on pilgrimage, this book will be most helpful to you in many ways, as you walk through the Shrine grounds and, above all, as you cultivate, through the powerful devotion of pilgrimage to a sacred place, a deeper relationship with Our Lord and His Virgin Mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
