Mississippi Valley Conservancy invites the public to join in a hands-on conservation
effort at New Amsterdam Grasslands near Holmen on Wednesday, September 30 th from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to take part in collecting native prairie seeds that will
be used to restore critical wildlife habitat in La Crosse County.
Following a series of successful prescribed fires on the 310-acre nature preserve, the prairie species on the
site have begun to flourish once again. But some additional help is needed to continue the habitat
restoration at New Amsterdam Grasslands. By collecting and dispersing seeds from valuable native
plants, volunteers are helping to increase the food resources of rare pollinators, birds, and other animals
that live in wild spaces across La Crosse County. This low impact restoration activity is perfect for
families with children, church or service groups, or employer-sponsored volunteer events.
Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear and protective clothing for walking
through tall grasses and wildflowers.
