Cruise the Mississippi River

If you enjoy boating, the La Crosse Region has plenty of options to get you out on the water. Launch your own boat at one of the many boat ramps in the area or rent one from local businesses such as American Marine or Design A Cruise. From there, set your course north toward Lock and Dam No. 7, south toward Lock and Dam No. 8, or pull your boat up onto one of the region’s many sandbars. Feeling hungry during your outing? Cruise right up to Pettibone Boat Club or Huck Finn’s on the Water for a delicious meal that overlooks the region’s waterways.
Explore the Black River

The Black River may not start on every paddler’s list, but those who know it love it. With multiple landings from Highway 53, Highway 35, and Lytle’s Landing, there’s easy access and a variety of options for paddlers of all skill levels. As you make your way along this scenic river, you’ll pass through the Van Loon Wildlife Area, a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep your eyes peeled for herons, woodpeckers, and other rare bird species that call this area home. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned paddler, Kayoe SUP’s river classes offer a playful, engaging way to experience the local river up close.

Paddle Lake Onalaska

Set in the heart of the La Crosse Region, Lake Onalaska is a paddler’s paradise. With options ranging from designated water trails, such as the scenic Lake Onalaska Water Trail, to peaceful shoreline exploration, this area offers adventures for paddlers of all skill levels. Don’t have your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard? No problem! Rentals are conveniently available from a variety of local outfitters such as Schafer’s River Rentals and Kayak Kiosk. With calm waters, abundant wildlife, and plenty of space to explore, Lake Onalaska is the perfect destination for a family outing or a relaxing day on the water.

Cast a Line at the French Island Spillway

The La Crosse Region is also a haven for anglers, offering great fishing opportunities from both boat and shore. One of the area’s most popular spots is the French Island Spillway. It’s a half-mile hike in, but the honey hole is well worth it! This spot is known for an abundance of fish and diverse species and has been the winning location for Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments! From bait and tackle to expert local advice, Island Outdoors is known to provide everything an angler needs for a successful day on the water. Whether you’re an expert or trying fishing for the first time, the French Island Spillway is the perfect place to reel in epic memories.

Paddle Camp on Goose Island
STODDARD, WISCONSIN
Just south of La Crosse, Goose Island County Park and Campground offers a one-of-a-kind paddle camping experience on the Mississippi River. The park features over 350 campsites, many with electric hookups and modern amenities, making it easy to enjoy nature without leaving comfort behind. Paddlers can explore the 7–7.5-mile Goose Island Trail while winding through calm backwaters and scenic sloughs. Additionally, about half the trail goes upstream, adding a fun challenge for explorers. Canoes are available for rent, and boats can be moored at designated spots along the shore. With peaceful waters, beautiful wildlife, and cozy campsites, Goose Island is the perfect spot to make memories and dive into day-long paddling excursions.
Find Your Zen on Lake Neshnoc

Lake Neshonoc in West Salem is a peaceful paddling destination in the La Crosse Region, known for its calm waters, gentle ripples, and minimal boat traffic. Its serene setting makes it ideal for beginners learning to paddle, and it also allows for unique water experiences that would not be possible on other local waterways. During the summer months, Root Down Yoga Studio hosts stand-up paddleboard yoga classes on the lake, allowing participants the ultimate opportunity to stretch, breathe in fresh air, and connect with nature… all while floating on the water (provided that you can keep your balance, of course)!
