TWO AMAZING CONCERTS: ‘Too highly seasoned’, ran a review of Mozart’s six ‘Haydn’ Quartets from 1785. ‘And whose palate can endure this for long?’ From 1782-1785, Mozart labored over his set of six quartets with the intention of dedicating them to his closest friend and mentor, Joseph Haydn, who at the time was known as the greatest living composer of the string quartet. Upon hearing them performed for the first time in January of 1785, Haydn famously exclaimed to Mozart’s father, “I tell you before God, and as an honest man, your son is the greatest composer known to me by person and repute; he has taste and what is more the most profound knowledge of composition.”

Artaria brings all six extraordinary works to Nola Starling Recital Hall at Viterbo University on January 25 and 26 to be performed in their order in two parts. The set contains some of Mozart’s most famous works, for ex. the ‘Hunt’ Quartet, K.458, and the ‘Dissonance’, K.465, and embrace some of his most memorable melodic writing and refined compositional thinking. Details for the January 25 and 26 concerts are below.

ABOUT THE ARTARIA STRING QUARTET
A warm, rich sound is the hallmark of the Artaria String Quartet, now in its 39th year and lauded by Rob Hubbard of the St. Paul Pioneer Press — “Artaria Quartet is likely to give eloquent voice to whatever work it tackles.” Artaria has served as MPR Artists-in-Residence and was featured on Twin Cities Public Television as part of the MN-Original Television series. Recipient of a highly coveted McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians, Artaria is firmly rooted in the great traditions of chamber music and were mentored by members of the Budapest, Kolisch, LaSalle, and Juilliard Quartets. Artaria is a staunch advocate of contemporary composers, premiering a wide range of new and commissioned works, supporting students and composers of diversity, and contributing toward the healing of past wounds allowing all to thrive.
