Top Picks For International Flavors
Written by Randi Gleason
As someone who crisscrosses the country in our RV nearly eight months a year for work, I’ve dined in a lot of cities. And while our work takes us to locations both big and small, it’s not often we get to experience a food scene as magical as the one in the La Crosse Region. Nestled along the Mississippi River, this unassuming gem consistently surprises and delights with every visit with its dynamic food scene. And, more specifically, it’s a melting pot of international flavors that would rival any large city. I get giddy with anticipation each year we have La Crosse on our travel schedule and I am excited to share my favorites of their International Flavors.

Mimi’s Kitchen
A Taste of Thailand and Southeast Asian Cuisine
My journey began at Mimi’s Kitchen, and before I continue, – it was so delicious I actually dined there twice in one week. In the deli, you’ll find Hmong sticky rice, sausage, and Hmong eggrolls to name a few. But the real star for me was their Pad Thai, a perfect balance of tangy and savory with just the perfect amount of spice and perfectly tender noodles. Be sure to add on their eggrolls as well – they’re crispy on the outside and filled with a savory combo of bean thread, pork, cabbage, carrots, and more. We also had their Pho, we opted for the Beef Rib version. The broth is rich, aromatic, and brimming with flavor. They also provide a fresh basil, lime, pepper, and bean sprouts to season how you wish.

SAGRA Food & Wine
A Slice of Italy in the Heart of La Crosse
For a bit more upscale dining experience, SAGRA Food and Wine delivers on all fronts. It’s rare to find Italian food this authentic outside of Italy itself. Inspired by a mix of rustic Italian classics and Roman Street food, you will find locally sourced ingredients, homemade pasta, expertly crafted dishes, and an intimate atmosphere that make it a perfect spot for a special evening. Also, the Caesar salad was the best I’ve ever had – crisp, refreshing, and dressed just right. Whether you’re craving pasta or a fine Italian wine, SAGRA feels like a little slice of Italy tucked into downtown La Crosse.

Uno Venti
Pizza Perfection
While we are talking Italian, let’s talk pizza. When it comes to pizza, Uno Venti stands apart. They use a special Italian milled flour for their crust, which creates a texture that’s both chewy and crispy, unlike anything you’ll find at your average pizza joint. Additionally, I love how this restaurant also utilizes locally sourced ingredients. They utilize two types of mozzarella cheese – Organic Valley in La Farge, WI supplies a low moisture mozzarella that is made using milk from over 600 regional dairy farm families and another cheese which is made in Eastern Wisconsin by the cheesemakers of BelGioioso. The silky smooth and porcelain white mozzarella is a perfect addition to their pies. The real magic is watching your pizza being made in their authentic pizza oven. There’s something special about seeing the care and craftsmanship that goes into every pie. From classic Margherita to more inventive toppings, every bite is a testament to their dedication to tradition.

LAX Grille
A Downtown Fusion of Flavors
Next, I ventured to the newly opened LAX Grill, which has quickly become a downtown favorite. At first glance, you’ll see the menu tells a story that this meal is going to be special. LAX Grille is mastering Asian fusion and my taste buds were game. The menu contains a rich tapestry of Asian flavors, from the woks of Japan, to the vibrant flavors and spices of Thailand, the savory soups of Vietnam to the authentic BBQ of Hmong. The pho here competes with the best in town. I would also add the crab rangoons and spring rolls. On my second visit, yes once was not enough, I experienced the Cashew Chicken stir-fry and it is everything you want in a dish – tender, flavorful, and combined with the perfect blend of veggies and even pineapple. LAX Grille is the kind of place that will have you thinking about your next visit after you’ve just left.

Taqueria Pato Azul
A Fiesta of Tacos
For those craving Mexican, Taqueria Pato Azul is an absolute must. The tacos here are a fiesta of flavors, with specialties like Barbacoa, mahi-mahi, Korean BBQ, and jerk shrimp. Each bite is a flavorful journey, and the peach margarita makes for a perfect pairing. Their queso? Unlike anything I’ve tasted before – it’s intriguing, flavorful, and unique in the best way possible. Pato Azul’s tacos are hands down some of the best you’ll find, not just in La Crosse, but anywhere. And the restaurant is a vibe – the perfect location for a curated cocktail and dining with friends.

Sue Casa Pub & Grill
Breakfast with a Mexican Twist
For breakfast, we ventured to Su Casa in Holmen, Wisconsin. It’s a short drive and definitely worth it. Their Mexican breakfast skillet was the highlight of the meal – a hearty blend of layered hashbrowns, spices, onions, eggs, and chorizo (made in-house) covered with melted cheese. It was truly packed with flavor and it’s obvious the restaurant is a local favorite, bustling with breakfastgoers. With an extensive breakfast menu, Sue Casa is the perfect start to any day of exploring the La Crosse Region.

Le Chateau
A French Escape
Dining at Le Chateau is like stepping into a Europe experience. We opted to dine downstairs at La Cave where they offer small plates and expertly crafted cocktails and French wines. Set within the historic Mons Anderson Mansion, a beautifully restored blend of Gothic Revival and Italian Villa styles, the ambiance alone is worth the visit. The mansion, built with locally quarried stone, once stood as a symbol of Victorian-era opulence, and today it is recognized as one of La Crosse’s most architecturally significant landmarks. Whether you are stopping in for dessert, drinks and small plates, or ordering from the full menu upstairs, Le Chateau offers a unique dining experience that is both elegant and inviting—a true taste of France in the heart of Wisconsin.

Señor Villa
A Flavorful Mexican Eatery in Onalaska
If you’re in the mood for authentic Mexican cuisine with a great price, Señor Villa in Onalaska, Wisconsin, is the place to be. We dined on their $5 lunch specials. From hearty burritos to flavorful enchiladas, the portions are generous, and the flavors are rich. One of the standout flavors is their signature “Mexican ranch” dipping sauce, served with crispy tortilla chips—it’s a creamy, zesty twist that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or enjoying a leisurely dinner, Señor Villa offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere with dishes that satisfy every craving.
The La Crosse Region definitely has a global heart when it comes to food. Whether you’re craving pho, tacos, or homemade pasta, there’s a perfect eatery for every palate. Every time I’m back, I can’t help but feel like I’m rediscovering the city all over again – one delicious meal at a time.
