Savor the flavors of fall at Southwind Orchards

Take in the sights, scents, and tastes of Southwind Orchards all in one visit.

Southwind Orchards is a local favorite for fresh, orchard-grown apples straight from the Driftless Region. Open from late August through the first week of November, their retail store features a wide variety of crisp apples, along with seasonal treats like cider, baked goods, and more. In keeping with their tradition of quality, every apple is carefully picked and ready to enjoy. For updates, be sure to check their Facebook page.

Planting the Seed

The Hechter family purchased the orchard in 1971 and it has stayed in their family since then. The Hechters focused on introducing new varieties along with classic favorites resulting in our current standing of 80,000+ trees.  Orchard Manager, John Curtis opened the retail part of the warehouse in September of 2004.

Unique Features

With over 30 varieties of apples available throughout the season, already picked and packed for you, you won’t need to wander the fields to pick your apples. If you’re lucky, they’ll have the packing line running when you stop in and you can watch the apples being washed, inspected, and packed.

Local Partners

Southwind Orchards is all about being local. Not only are their apples locally picked and grown, but they have lots in store from their neighbors. From honey harvested at B&B Honey Farm in Houston, Minnesota, to jams, jellies, salsas, and fruit butters crafted by Slack’s in Lodi, Wisconsin, their shelves are filled with regional flavor. You’ll also find caramel apples from La Crosse’s own Sweet Shop and hand-poured candles from the Pickwick Sisters. They are always adding more, too with this year bringing Cozy Apple Baby Beanies made in Duluth and charming apple gourd birdhouses created in Winona.

Pro Tip!

Try at least 2 new varieties!  You might think you have a favorite, but they have lots to choose from. Many say their favorite changes every couple of weeks, depending on what’s in season and ripe. Along with that, there is a picturesque gazebo and pond on the orchard grounds that can be rented for private weddings, pictures or get-togethers.
