Recently voted No. 1 of USA Today’s 10 Best Scenic Drives, the Great River Road is both a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road that traverses ten states along the Mississippi River. The La Crosse Region and the famous Driftless bluffs proudly sit on the route. The region is part of the 33 Mississippi River towns along Highway 35, and welcomes the many visitors the scenic drive brings year-round.

From river overlooks to bluff-top views, here are a few favorite stops to inspire your next Mississippi River road trip.

1. Apple Blossom Scenic Overlook

La Crescent, MN
Apple Blossom Overlook’s name nods to La Crescent’s multitude of orchards. Located on the skirts of the Apple Capital of Minnesota, the overlook bursts with Mississippi River views framed by spring apple blossoms and vibrant fall foliage.

2. Big Blue Bridge

La Crosse, WI
Connecting La Crescent and La Crosse, the Big Blue Bridge is an iconic La Crosse landmark. Whether flowing or frozen, the Mississippi River below and the bridge above are the backdrop to many regional events and attractions.

3. International Friendship Gardens

La Crosse, WI
Nestled within Riverside Park, this sister-city compilation garden blooms with diverse, global flora during the spring and summer. Complete with a pond, stream, water wheel, and sculptures, it is a peaceful escape within the bustling park.

4. Grandad Bluff

La Crosse, WI
Grandad Bluff, a Wisconsin wonder, towers 600 feet above La Crosse with panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley and three states. The landmark is especially vibrant in autumn, with the bluffs ablaze in gold and crimson, and can be explored via the Gateway Trail System or a scenic drive to the overlook.

5. Eagle Watch

La Crosse, WI
Along the Black River, the Eagle Watch offers a first-class show during early spring. As the ice melts, birdwatchers flock to the overlook to observe and photograph the Bald Eagles feasting on spring’s finest fish.

6. Great River Landing

Onalaska, WI
Great River Landing is home to the Great River State Trailhead, known for its 101 miles of interconnecting state trails. During the summer months, the destination shines with views of Lake Onalaska, a Welcome Center, sculptures, and public outdoor instruments.

7. Sunny the Sunfish

Onalaska, WI
“Sunny” is a 15-foot sculpture that celebrates Onalaska as the Sunfish Capital of the World. Overlooking Lake Onalaska and with views of the Minnesota bluffs beyond, it is a lively, family-friendly overlook year-round.

8. Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge

The Refuge spans over 240,000 acres in total and celebrated its 100th year in 2024. The La Crosse Region’s welcome center and refuge portion offers year-round nature experiences, birding, educational programming, and more.
