Started by Gary Wyman in the early 1960’s, The Drovers continue to be a prominent force in the Central-Wisconsin live music scene. Opening for national touring artists, playing at your cousin’s wedding or performing at a rural country bar, you never know where you will find The Drovers.
Originally a three-piece group featuring two Fender Telecasters and a drum set, The Drovers now feature musicians playing steel guitar, fiddle, lead guitar, bass guitar and drums. With a focus on providing musical variety for any occasion, the band does not traditionally work with a set list and songs selections are often audience driven. For their debut performance at Leo and Leona’s, The Drovers have decided to focus on paying tribute to the Bakersfield Sound.
The Bakersfield Sound is a sub-genre of country music developed in the mid-to-late 1950s in and around Bakersfield, California. It is said to be the first subgenre of country music significantly influenced by rock and roll. It was also a reaction against the slickly produced, orchestra-laden Nashville Sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950’s. Wynn Stewart pioneered the Bakersfield Sound, while Buck Owens with The Buckeroos & Merle Haggard with The Strangers became two of the most successful artists of the original Bakersfield era.
