Apple Blossom Scenic Drive

Spring Apple Blossom Season

Starting in late May you should plan to bike or drive the 17 mile scenic Apple Blossom Drive, to experience the natural beauty of blossoming apple trees. Ride along the bluff-top roads that overlook the Mississippi River and La Crosse, Wisconsin and descend into the Pine Creek Valley for your return trip back to La Crescent, Minnesota.

Looking to explore via bicycle? Click here to view an interactive map which provides a detailed description, elevation, cue sheets, and more.

Coming in the Fall?

Trees are blossoming throughout spring and summer, but as you drive or bike in the fall, plan to stop and pick fresh apples, taste the local apple cider, and purchase your fall pumpkins. Winter is also an opportune time to visit the area, experience perfect snowy landscapes, and snap photos of the migratory birds of the river valley area.

Learn about the Scottish Gaelic Language

Do ye ha’ a wee bit of Scots in your background or have you been watching Outlander and need to find out more about this fascinating country and the Gaelic language? Then visit Castlerock Museum in Alma, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 19th at 2pm, for a fascinating program by Sharon Byers. Visitors will walk away with a bit of history and knowing a wee smidge of Gaelic.

The Gaelic language was brought to Scotland from Irish settlers in the 4th or 5th century and became the official language of the Highland region. After the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and during the Highland Clearances, speaking Gaelic, wearing clan tartans, playing the bagpipes, and carrying weapons were forbidden. By 2011, less than 2% of the population still spoke Gaelic. Since then, Scotland has worked to revitalize the language.

While at the museum, visitors can also check out several authentic Scottish artifacts on display including a two handed claymore sword, a boarding cutlass, two dirks, and a skean dhu knife.

Sharon Byers has a lifelong interest in Scottish history and culture stemming from her own Scottish heritage. She is also a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism.

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Museum members receive a 50% discount. Seating is limited. Reservations are not required but appreciated. The museum will open at 1:00pm for visitors that would like to see the exhibits beforehand.

Contact the museum at 608-685-4231 or info@castlerockmuseum.com for more details.

2018 Cabela’s National Team Championship Relocated To La Crosse County Due To Flooding

www.walleyefederation.com

Presented by Cabela’s

Ponca City, Okla.—May 9, 2018—The 2018 Cabela’s National Team Championship (NTC) has been moved from the Quad Cities area to Pools 7, 8 and 9 of the Mississippi River out of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Originally scheduled event dates of May 17-19 will remain the same.

“For more than a year, river anglers from across North America have been planning to visit the Quad Cities area for the NTC’s first trip to the Mississippi River—but Mother Nature had other ideas, and due to forecast flooding we are forced to move the event to a different site along the river,” said Robert Cartlidge, President and CEO of The Walleye Federation, which organizes the event on behalf of their  corporate partner, Cabela’s “The World Foremost Outfitter” and other sponsors.

“We exhausted all safe possibilities to keep the event in the Quad Cities as announced,” Cartlidge continued. “Unfortunately, water conditions there just would not support that goal. I want to thank the Quad Cities for all of their support on this decision to move.  They have been great to work with throughout the planning and relocation process, and we will try to go back there for an event someday.”

Cartlidge also acknowledged the support of Cabela’s NTC anglers, many of whom had spent months planning their Quad Cities visit. “We thank everyone who has been patient throughout this transition and the flooding issues,” he said. “Last-minute changes are something that no one likes, least of all us, but the relocated NTC has quickly taken shape into a fine championship event, thanks to the hard work of our staff. I am very proud of them to put all this together almost overnight.”

As a result of the move, Explore La Crosse (www.explorelacrosse.com) is now hosting the prestigious national championship, which is widely considered the pinnacle of grassroots walleye tournament fishing.

The Cabela’s NTC annually draws hundreds of two-person teams from the U.S. and Canada, who qualified for the event through local TWF-sanctioned competitions.

This year’s NTC field stands at 200 teams, which will compete for a lucrative payout offering nearly 400 percent payback on entry fees. Anglers will fish for a minimum of $250,000 in cash and prizes, plus 50 custom Cabela’s All-American rings, trophies, travel stipends, plaques and more. First prize is $25,000 in cash plus a brand-new Mercury-powered Ranger boat.  A second Ranger-Mercury combo will be awarded through the Ranger Cup contingency, meaning the victors could take home more than $165,000 in cash and prizes.

The entire field will compete the first two days. Each team will be allowed to bring their best five fish to the scale each day. Competition will be fierce, as only the top 25 teams advance to the final round on day three.

Take-offs and weigh-ins will be held at Veterans Freedom Park located at 1 Clinton Street in La Crosse. Take-offs begin at 7 a.m., and fans are invited to the launch to cheer on their favorite teams each morning. Weigh-ins start at 3:30 p.m. daily, and should provide spectators with a steady stream of Mississippi River walleyes, plus the excitement of watching hundreds of the world’s top walleye anglers fight for the national crown.

Those unable to attend can watch weigh-ins stream live online at walleyefederation.com. The action will also be filmed for national television airing on NBC Sports’ “Americana Outdoors” and the Pursuit Channel. Dates and airtimes will be announced at walleyefederation.com.

Dale Radcliffe, director of the TWF-sanctioned circuit Mighty Miss Walleye Series, assures anglers the move will not affect their ability to enjoy world-class fishing.

“This section of the Mississippi has an excellent walleye fishery ranging from Lake Onalaska on Pool 7 to the vast channels and winding backwaters of Pools 8 and 9,” he reported. “The river has several strong year-classes of walleyes and saugers, with many fish in the 20-inch-plus class and some occasional bruisers over 10 pounds. Typical May weights are in excess of 20 pounds for a four-fish limit on our circuit.”

Radcliffe noted that water levels are quickly receding from a late spring in the region. “Things are slightly delayed about two weeks in the walleye world here right now.” he said. “The spawn wrapped up in the last week, so many female walleyes will be just coming out of a recovery period and be ready to put the feedbag on. The event dates should be perfectly timed to this part of the year where an expected 4- to 5-pound average will be the norm to cash a check.”

Cabela’s NTC sponsors include Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Ranger Boats, Pepsi, Geico. Mercury, Explore La Crosse, and TWF.

Based in Ponca City, Oklahoma, The Walleye Federation manages the qualifying process and co-produces the event alongside the Cabela’s Corporate Brand Partnership Team.

By: Sara Walters

Between the Bluffs: Beer, Wine & Cheese Festival – Saturday, April 28

Beer, Wine and Cheese. It’s a Wisconsinite’s dream combination. Celebrated each spring in La Crosse, this favorite event is one of the city’s most popular festivals. Here’s what you should know before you shine up your stein and head to the beer tent

The party starts early.

The fun kicks off on Friday night with Taster’s Eve. Enjoy drink specials from 5-11pm thanks to local establishments and vendor partners who have teamed up to bring fest goers a budget-friendly night out. Plus, ticket holders (and their buddies, for only $5) can also use the free shuttle that will loop between stops.

There will be bacon.

After a long day on Saturday, you’ll need to refuel at the Bacon Bloody Brunch on Sunday. Have some delicious bacon and pancakes, while listening to some live music. If you need a little hair of the dog, there will also be beermosas and of course, delicious Bloody Marys.

You can be a VIP.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a VIP ticket, you’ll get all the fun of general admission and more! This purchase gets you on-site parking, admission to the Brewer’s Reception on Friday night, a special gift, access to the VIP tent and best of all, first chance at sampling. That’s right, VIPs are allowed into the festival at 12pm prior to general admission at 2pm.

Safety is top priority.

With close proximity to an assortment of downtown lodging options, festers don’t have to leave town after a day of sampling. There’s also a shuttle available as a responsible transportation option. And no underage drinking is allowed. A valid 21+ ID is required to enter the grounds, no exceptions.

Your glass is for sampling.

Entry to the festival comes with a complimentary, commemorative sampling glass for you to use throughout the day. Expect pours to be 2 ounces or less for beer and 1 ounce or less for wine. You can have as many samples as you’d like, but keep in mind that intoxicated patrons may be asked to leave.

5 Things to Know Bassmasters & Rotary Rock n’ Ribs Edition

By: Sara Walters

What more accurately describes summer than grilling out and dropping a line?

Two popular warm weather past times have joined forces for an awesome local event featuring Rotary Rock n’ Ribs and Bassmaster Elite. Here are five things you should know before you go.

We’re at the mall, y’all
The parking lot at Valley View Mall will serve as a hub of entertainment, food and fun—oh and fish—from June 21-24 (BBQ events June 22-24). Taste world-class BBQ from skilled grillers while enjoying live music and cold beer.

Bassmasters are for real
These fisherman aren’t here for a leisurely trip down the Mississippi. They’re here to compete and they do it in style. One of the best parts of the weekend is catching a glimpse of their ultra-fast, extra-flashy bass boats. They also bring along their big-time, national vendors, who will be set up for the public at the event.

BBQ is king
It’s a weekend about all things BBQ and you can smell it in the air. There’s a pulled-pork competition, a steak cookoff and of course, ribs. Affiliated with the Kansas City Barbeque Society, Rotary Rock n’ Ribs attracts some of the best grillers around. Attendees can taste and vote on the pulled pork and ribs, so get ready to pig out!

Weight for it…
If you like the sport of fishing at all, or if you just want to see what kind of creatures lurk beneath the surface of the Mississippi, make sure you stick around for the official weigh-in. Each day at 3pm, fishermen bring in their trophies, giving you a glimpse of the monsters they’ve snagged. On days 1 and 2 of the tournament, weigh-in will take place at Veterans Freedom Park. On Days 3 and 4, you’ll be able to watch at Valley View Mall.

Kids can come, too
At only $5 a ticket, it’s affordable to bring the whole family for some finger-lickin food. There’s even a Kids Q competition for kids ages 7-15 that your youngsters may find inspiring.
