Wisconsin Great River Road

Stretching 250 miles from Prescott in the north to Kieler in the south, U.S. Highway 35 in Wisconsin (the Wisconsin Great River Road) is home to 33 Mississippi River towns, several of which are among the state’s oldest communities. More than two-thirds of the highway traverses protected natural areas, providing countless opportunities for hiking, paddling, fishing, and other outdoor activities. The pristine natural beauty of the Mississippi River Valley and surrounding bluffs, which at times send the road climbing some 500 feet above the river, provide breathtaking views any time of year, making this highway a roadtripper’s delight.

Apple Blossom Scenic Drive

Early to Mid-May is the peak season to experience the natural beauty of the Apple Blossom Scenic Drive. The route famous for its breathtaking, rolling landscape that bursts with thousands of sweet-smelling apple blossoms. Travel along the bluff-top roads that overlook the Mississippi River and La Crosse, and descend into the Pine Creek Valley for your return trip back to La Crescent, Minnesota.

“The nearby orchards remind us of our heritage, especially in the spring with the apple blossoms and their fragrance or in the fall with the multitude of colors,” states the La Crescent Chamber of Commerce. The history is rich in La Crescent as their first orchard was planted in the 1850s. The small community is claimed as the Apple Capital of Minnesota, but the orchards span far into the bluffs along the Minnesota Scenic Byway.

Festivals

The La Crosse Region is home to some of the best festivals around, including our world-renowned Oktoberfest celebration, the Between the Bluffs Beer, Wine, & Cheese Festival, IrishfestRiverfest, the Great River Folk Festival, and more. While that might be plenty of festing for some people, we say there’s no such thing as a bad excuse for a party, and the surrounding communities have plenty of their own festivals to help fill up the calendar. Any time of year, take the opportunity enjoy our beautiful countryside as you make your way any of these of small-town events:
