Pantizke at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway

By: Paul Reichert

Another warm night greeted race fans at the LaCrosse Speedway, but cooler and smarter heads would prevail in the heat of battle in tonight’s racing action. Steve Carlson may have a stranglehold on the NASCAR Late Model championship race, but reigning track champion Nick Panitzke still has some fight left in him. Pantizke would take the lead from Nick Clements with three laps to go, and keep Carlson at bay to capture his third feature win of 2018.

Pole sitter Tom Carlson surged ahead of Jerimy Wagner to lead the first three laps of the NASCAR Late Model feature. Wagner would catch Carlson and take the lead from him on lap four. Nick Clements got around Carlson for second two laps later. Clements could not make up a lot of ground on Wagner as the Onalaska veteran would maintain a lead of four car lengths. Would tonight be the night Wagner’s rough patch came to an end? It would be derailed by a caution on lap 13. Justin Mullikin’s rear end was smoking and leaking fluid, causing Justin Zmyewski and Ryan Brown to spin out in turn two. On the restart, Clements would assume command of the race from Wagner. Wagner would once again catch a second wind to charge past Clements and take back the lead on lap 17. Behind him, Nick Panitzke and Steve Carlson were starting to enter the picture.

Both made quick work of Clements on lap 18. They began reeling in Wagner over the next four laps. Panitzke dove under Wagner in turn one on lap 22 to take over the top spot, while Carlson would claim second down the back straight. Both would be nose-to-tail in the closing laps, but Panitzke would not be denied victory in the end. After the race, Panitzke said “I think we fell behind due to lack of effort in recent weeks. We will continue to keep plugging away.” Wagner matched his career best feature finish with a third, while Mike Carlson and Cole Howland rounded out the top five.

Patiently working his way through the field in the Sportsmen feature, Tom Luethe would get around Dan Secor for the lead at halfway. Secor would crash on the back straight with four laps to go. Luethe had to deal with both uncle Dan Gilster and Chris Weber, but Luethe would successfully keep them behind him and capture his fourth feature win in five weeks.

Taylor Dobbs would lead the first half of the Thunderstox feature, but then Adam Moore would drive around Dobbs to take the win. After slicing and dicing his way through the field in the Mini-Van feature, Matt Moore would take the lead just before halfway to claim his second straight feature win.

Halfway through the show the annual wacky Outhouse Race novelty event took place. While Chris Christen took a header getting to the outhouse, Adam Moore was the quickest to grab the toilet paper.

Action continues next Saturday night, August 18th with the weekly racing finale. The final weekly show of 2018 before Oktoberfest includes the last double feature night of the season for the NASCAR Late Models, plus the Sportsmen, Thunderstox and Street Stocks. Bring the kids out early for the last KQ98 Kids’ Rides of the season. Gates open at 6:00, qualifying takes place at 6:15 and racing starts at 7:30.

5 Things to Know: Wrench & Roll Collective Bicycle Tours

By: Sara Walters

There are two things that are hard to miss when you travel to La Crosse County—its beauty and its active communities. Views always consist of not just awesome bluffs and rivers, but also hikers, bikers and paddlers enjoying the terrain. Matt Christen of Wrench & Roll Collective has combined these two local features into the ultimate, active outing—guided bike tours. Here are five things you should know about this creative way to explore the Coulee Region.

1. You’re in good hands. Christen, the brains (and bike) behind Wrench & Roll, is a nationally-certified cycling instructor. He even shares his knowledge before each tour with a quick rundown on bike fit, basic gear and riding tips.

2. It’s active, but also informative. Riders will spend 60-90 minutes on their bikes so you’ll definitely get your workout in. But you’re also guaranteed to take home a little history, as well. Wrench & Roll offers different tour options based on your interest so you can get smart while you get sweaty.

3. Follow the leader…and your interests. Christen has options for all types of tours, from local sculptures and breweries, to recreational or custom rides. Select your tour topic and he’ll make sure your experience is tailored to your tastes. Most rides start at the Eagle statue in La Crosse’s Riverside Park, though custom tours do occasionally start at area businesses or hotels.

4. They’ve got the gear, too. Don’t have a bike? That’s okay, Wrench & Roll has you covered. Bike rentals are $7 per person. You’ll also be equipped with a helmet and complimentary water to keep you hydrated.

5. It’s great for groups. Looking for a fun business or family outing? Try a Wrench & Roll tour! Custom tours are designed around your goals and needs. They can be arranged at any time with at least 24-hours notice.

Fannin Counseling & Art Therapy Call For Artists

Exhibition, Where Are You From? Opening Friday, September, 7 2018

Application Deadline: August 20, 2018

Where Are You From?

Friday, September,  7 – October 26, 2018

No cost to apply – All artists & individuals welcome to submit 2D & 3D work

La Crosse, WI–Fannin Counseling & Art Therapy (129 6th St S, La Crosse, across from the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman) will be hosting its fall art exhibition, entitled Where Are You From?, to debut Friday, September 7, 2018, to October 26, 2018.

Where Are You From? asks how you came to be: Where were you born? Where have you been? Who came before you? What events shaped you? Any single factor or combination of factors is fair game. Your childhood home, your cultural identity, a memorable moment, your family history… Where Are You From? asks artists, “How did you become you?”

All modes and media are welcome. Artists are invited to submit two- and three-dimensional work that is representational of Where Are You From?

Where Are You From? will also feature two individual exhibitions from artists Robert Caldwell and Dewayne Wrencher. The individual exhibitions will be in two parts:

  • Robert Caldwell: September 7-28, 2018

Altar Assemblage Workshop: Saturday, September 15, 2018

  • Dewayne Wrencher – October 5-26, 2018

About the artists:

Robert Caldwell

Assemblage artist Robert Caldwell of Viroqua, WI, has been creating “altars to the unknown” for more than 40 years. Using a wide variety of methods and objects, Caldwell creates his altars to “facilitate the unconscious in speaking the individuating message it has to offer.”  In creating each altar, Caldwell pays little attention to “traditional aesthetics.” In fact, he does not view his works as art at all:  “This is not art, and I do not identify as an artist. Each altar is a relic of a living, transformative event in my psyche whose exact purpose cannot be understood or defined.  I recommend this process to anyone who is longing for truth and experiential meaning.”

Dewayne Wrencher

Printmaker, poet, and illustrator Dewayne Wrencher creates art that seeks to build a dialogue on complex questions of identity, questions which are central both to his methods and observations as an artist, and to the audience’s viewing of his work. “There have been repetitive questions circling the globe that center on the topics of home and identity. Questions like, who am I and is there a place on this planet I can truly call home?” Wrencher creates works using prints, found objects, and creative wordplay, exploring these themes in a unique, challenging form. “I want viewers to question their current assumptions of reality regarding social differences.”

Things to Know: Cruisin’ Craft Beer & Film Festival

By Sara Walters

Saturday, August 25th, 2018
Weber Center for the Performing Arts
Beer tasting begins at 6pm
http://cruisinfestival.com/

CLICK TO WIN TICKETS!

For many in La Crosse County, biking is the prefered mode of transportation. Cruisin’ Craft Beer and Film Festival celebrates this local love through its first-ever bike-centered film event.

Things you should know before you go:

1. Anyone can attend – Tickets are available for film fans of all ages. Shows and speakers are family-friendly and the Weber Center for Performing Arts is a comfortable viewing venue for squirmy kiddos. At 6pm though, attendees must be 21+. Tickets are only $5 for kids under 12.

2. Bikers also love beer – In a city that has a group called “Beer by Bike Brigade,” cold beverages go hand-in-hand with biking in La Crosse. The festival’s craft beer tasting will feature over 20 options to sample. $50 gets you complete access to both beer and films.

3. It’s the perfect pairing – There will be music from Isaac Dummer and his acoustic guitar to enjoy while you taste the beers. What’s better than a little live music and a cold brew on a summer night? Add the Weber Center’s beautiful Mississippi River view to that and you’ve got an awesome evening ahead.

4. Bike-centered stories – All of the films featured at the event will relate in some way to bicycles, bicyclists, and bicycling in interesting, creative, and even surprising ways. This year’s event even has a (possibly-foreshadowing) film about biking after a night of tasting too many beers!
