5 Cures for Cabin Fever

5 Cures for Cabin Fever

By: Sara Walters

5 Cures for Cabin Fever

Are you done with winter? Us too.

Luckily, La Crosse County has an abundance of activities to help beat that cabin fever while we wait for the weather to warm up. Here are a few ideas to get you off the couch and back into the community.

Burn some energy

A relatively new addition to La Crosse, Jump Start Adventure Park offers indoor fun for all ages. This trampoline park allows you to channel your inner Ninja Warrior and jump to your heart’s content. Try your hand (or foot) at Parkour and test your agility on the Extreme Nets Course.

Shop for antiques

La Crosse is lucky enough to have one of the state’s largest indoor antique shops for shoppers to explore. With three floors and 20,000 square feet of cool collectibles, it’s hard not to find something you like at The Antique Center of La Crosse.

Become a brewmaster

Need a new hobby to get you through the long winter? Visit WineSitter BrewHouse to pick up a beer or wine-making kit. They’ve got all the supplies you’ll need and the know-how to help you. Want a more supervised learning experience? Make an appointment for a start-to-finish wine-making session with the WineSitter’s experts.

Dream of warm weather fun

Summertime sneaks up on us in Wisconsin, so grab your music-loving buddies and plan your trip to Country Boom, the area’s newest music festival. Held at the Maple Grove Venues in West Salem in July, this event boasts an impressive lineup of country acts. Mark your calendars, buy your tickets and wish for warmer weather. It’s almost here!

Imagine the open road

It might be too cold to ride the Coulees, but you can cycle up a sweat at Uptown Cycle instead. Get in the saddle for a variety of classes, from a full-body “pedal ‘n pump” option to more traditional cycling sessions.

Disclaimer: This is just my perspective on La Crosse County events, businesses and activities. I’m only one local opinion. Explore the rest of the site to learn more on those that I’ve missed.

Walking tours celebrate latest Hear, Here additions

Event is a collaboration between UWL, public library archives and Downtown Mainstreet, Inc.

Walking tours of Downtown La Crosse celebrating 17 newly added Hear, Here stories — from the perspective of Ho Chunk, Hmong, African American, Latino, LGBTQ+ and people who have experienced homelessness — will be from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28.

The event, “Last Cheer of Hear, Here: A Celebration of New Stories,” showcases the award-winning Hear, Here project, a collection of audio recordings of oral histories in downtown La Crosse that can be accessed by dialing a toll-free number at orange street signs. Hear, Here started as a project in one of UW-La Crosse Associate Professor Ariel Beaujot’s history classes in 2014. The additional stories in 2018 were recorded, edited and added by students in Beaujot’s spring semester class, “Hear, Here: Public History in Theory and Practice.”

Eight different tours will depart every 15 minutes from Downtown Main Street, Inc., 500 Main St., La Crosse. All tours will take about 1 hour. The event begins at 11 a.m. with opening remarks at 11:15 a.m. The event is free and includes food and coffee from Jules Coffee House.

Walking tours

11:30 a.m. – Ho-Chunk Monuments
11:45 a.m. – La Crosse racial injustice
Noon – The Purpose of a Park
12:15 p.m. Lost Architecture
12:30 p.m. – LGBTQ+ LAX
12:45 p.m. – Bottoms Up: Bar Culture
1 p.m. – Red Light La Crosse
1:15 p.m. – Taking a Stand: La Crosse Protests

Participants should bring mobile phones to hear the stories. The event is a partnership between UWL, The La Crosse Public Library Archives and Downtown Main Street, Inc.

Olivia Hoff, a UWL senior and public and policy history major in the class, learned that the process of collecting stories from underrepresented groups takes “understanding of your own humility.”

“These people of underrepresented groups share their stories with us with complete vulnerability,” she says. “I, as the interviewer, have to be willing to set aside my own perspective to completely engulf myself in their experience. This project has taught me that empathy is one of the most powerful emotions that can lead to greater change.”

Hoff would like to be a museum curator in the future. “Hear, Here has helped further my goal of working in a museum that piques the public’s interest in history.”

The event is supported in part through a Margins of Excellence grant from the UWL Provost’s Office.

Creating new Footsteps

Some of the Hear, Here walking tours will be added to the long-standing La

Crosse Public Library Archives Footsteps of La Crosse Tours, a series of tours by foot and bus highlighting historic and architecturally significant residences and buildings in La Crosse.

“Dr. Beaujot was very interested in having a stable place for these tours to live on beyond the Hear, Here project parameters,” says Scott Brouwer, archivist at the La Crosse Public Library. “These additional tours would add a completely different flavor to the existing menu of tours, while still maintaining the essence of the Footsteps of La Crosse project.”

The spring 2018 Footsteps of La Crosse walking tours are scheduled for April 24, May 1, May 8 and May 15.

Register and learn more at: www.footstepsoflacrosse.org. The fall tours will include Downtown, UWL, and Franciscan Neighborhood walking tours and a bus tour of the North Side. Dates will be Sept.  4, 11, 18, and 25, respectively.

New K-12 lessons development using Hear, Here

As part of “Last Cheer of Hear, Here: A Celebration of New Stories,” Hear, Here will launch new K-12 programming on its website.

Over the last year, UWL senior Sara Krueger has been developing interactive, student-centered lesson plans for eighth grade teachers who use Hear, Here stories to teach La Crosse history. She will also be developing similar material for high school students. Another graduate student at UW-Milwaukee, Calli Niemi, is creating lesson plans for fourth grade students.

One of Krueger’s lesson plans involves a field trip to downtown La Crosse to listen to the Hear, Here stories, as well as an in-class field trip alternative. Another lesson plan has students create their own Hear, Here-type stories about something they experienced in a location of their choice.

Hear, Here presents a unique opportunity for students to learn downtown history that has not yet been used in the classroom,” says Krueger, who is majoring in history education and broad field social studies education. “I owe many local teachers, UWL education professors and other education students a big thanks for their help and feedback!”

The students’ curriculum development is funded by the La Crosse Public Education Foundation and a UWL Undergraduate Research Grant.

Programming will be available on the Hear, Here website for anyone to use at www.hearherelacrosse.org/

LCT Announces 2018-2019 Season

La Crosse Community Theatre announced its 2018-2019 season on April 7 at its annual Patron Gala Fundraiser.

“This is an incredibly exciting season for LCT,” said Grant Golson, Executive Director of LCT. “We are presenting two musicals that have never been done on our stage before. There is truly something for everyone, whether you long to be onstage, behind the scenes, or simply want to sit in the audience and watch the magic unfold.”

The 2018-2019 season has 9 shows, including 2 musicals and 2 special offerings in the Veterans Studio Theatre. The season includes a mixture of LCT debuts and familiar classics.

The season opens with Mamma Mia, with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and some songs with Stig Anderson, book by Catherine Johnson, and originally conceived by Judy Craymer.ABBA’s hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman’s search for her birth father on the eve of her wedding.

The fall show will be Neil Simon’s comedy, Fools. The village has been cursed with chronic stupidity, and Leon has 24 hours to break the curse before he too, becomes stupid.

LCT’s holiday show will be Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot. When a Christmas party guest is murdered in his mansion, a Broadway star assumes the role of Sherlock Holmes to solve the crime-just in time for the holidays.

Back by popular demand, LCT will also reprise The Santaland Diaries during the holiday season. Written by nationally known comedian, David Sedaris, and adapted by Joe Mantello, The Santaland Diaries will star LCT actor and storyteller, Michael Scott. Like last year, this production will be in collaboration with The Pump House Regional Arts Center, with performances held at the Pump House and in the Weber Center’s Veterans Studio Theatre. The show is still for mature elves only.

In January, LCT will present a drama in the Veterans Studio Theatre. Wait Until Darkis the story of a blind woman who turns the table on a sinister con man and two ex-convicts when they attempt to hatch a plot against her.

Next in LCT’s season will be Tennessee Williams’ classic drama, A Streetcar Named Desire, about a woman whose life has been undermined by romantic illusions. As tensions rise with her brutish brother-in-law, her delusions give way to madness.

New York City’s newsboys seize the day in LCT’s spring musical, Newsies, when they strike against unfair working conditions set by publishing titan, Joseph Pulitzer.Newsies features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, book by Harvey Fierstein, and is based on the Disney Film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White.

Once again LCT will close out the season with a Theatre for Youth show. Evil has never been so adorable in Brian D. Taylor’s Dr. Evil and the Basket of Kittens. Dr. Evil wants to destroy the world, but when a basket of kittens arrives on his doorstep, it’s his world that is turned upside down.

Finally, LCT’s children’s touring show features Hans Christian Andersen at his storytelling best in Pixies, Kings and Magical Things. It’s a clever retelling of three classic tales: The SwineherdThe Pixie and the Grocer, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. This production will travel to area schools, bringing theatre to young audiences throughout the Coulee Region. There will also be performances in the Veterans Studio Theatre.

“Join us for a daring, bold, and exciting 2018-2019 season,” said Golson.

Season tickets are now available. The Lyche Theatre Package, which includes tickets to the five main stage shows, will be priced at an early bird discount of $122-$140 now through June 15, 2018. After June 15, the cost will be $129-$148. A Six-Pack Flex Package, whose tickets can be used in any combination to see any show, will be $146-$166. Wait Until Dark, the Veterans Studio show, will be $25 when ordered along with a season ticket.

Single ticket prices will be $10 for youth productions, $24-$32 for non-musicals and $26-$34 for musicals. Student and military prices will be $16 and $10 ($18 and $12 for musicals), respectively, with ID required. Driftless Music Festival Announces 2018 Lineup

Viroqua will again be alive with the sound of great music when the Driftless Music Festival (DMF) celebrates its 7th anniversary on Saturday, July 14, 2018. Food vendors start serving at noon and music plays from 1 to 10 p.m. in Eckhart Park adjacent to the Vernon County Courthouse on Decker St.

Dedicated to the proposition that great cities have great music festivals, the DMF will, as usual, feature a diverse array of musical genres, all by some of the finest talent across the Midwest region and beyond. There is no admission fee to the Festival. The music starts at 1pm with The Full Monte Project, an Illinois-based four-piece specializing in instrumental deep-pocket feels with plenty of groove + soul. The group was founded in 2015, and has been comprised of several Northern Illinois University jazz students over the years.

At approximately 2:30 Miss Tess and the Talkbacks take the stage. From Nashville, Miss Tess and her band regularly steal the show at venues with something a little rowdier and more eclectic. Infused with classic country and honky-tonk, southern rhythm & blues, New Orleans jazz and swing, and sounds of swamp pop and early rock n’ roll, she is an embodiment of everything that it still home-grown in America.

Following Miss Tess is In BLACK ‘n WHITE, a Wisconsin Reggae, Rock ‘n Soul band takes command of the stage. Collectively this band brings over 250 years of experience to the stage for your enjoyment. Backgrounds in Jazz, Classical, Rock, R&B, Latin, and Reggae gives the band an eclectic seasoned approach. Add some smooth vocals and it all becomes an extraordinary mix for your listening and visual delight.

Our featured band comes all the way from Louisiana. Cedryl Ballou and the Zydeco Trendsetters will definitely get you out of your chairs and on the dance floor. A young but seasoned zydeco musician and singer, Ballou shifts easily from drums to accordion and vocals, fronting the Zydeco Trendsetters and touring extensively with regional Zydeco artists, including Andre Thierry, Corey Ledet, Rosie Ledet, Step Rideau and Soul Creole.

As the sun sets and the lights come on, a collection of unique performers bring this year’s festival to a close. Mila is a professional women’s vocal ensemble grounded in the harmonic traditions of Eastern Europe and Russia. The ensemble typically performs a cappella at concerts, vocal and cultural workshops, festivals, schools, and corporate and private events.

The group also collaborates with instrumentalists and dancers, for special performances. Food vendors at this year’s Fest will provide a delicious variety of options, including pizza, crepes, Jamaican food, hot dogs and brats, hamburgers, and tacos, as well as strawberry shortcake, smoothies, French pastries and other tasty desserts. All vendors utilize local and regional sources as much as possible for their offerings.

More than 90 sponsors and donors from the region underwrite the cost of the Driftless Music Festival so that fine musical offerings can be heard for free. More information about the Festival, or about becoming a donor to support the event, is available at driftlessmusicfestival.com or by email to driftlessmusicfestival@gmail.com
