Things To Know: Mid West Music Fest 2018

LA CROSSE WI APRIL 13-14, 2018

GET TICKETS HERE!

By: Sara Walters

One of the area’s most notable music festivals is fast approaching.

Here are  things to know if you plan to attend Mid West Music Fest (MWMF) 2018.

There’s something for everyone.

If you like music, you’ll find a band you enjoy. MWMF is self-described as an “all-ages, multiple-genre, volunteer-driven festival.” This year, La Crosse will feature the Latin flavor of De La Buena while Charlie Parr’s country blues will entertain in Winona. You’ll also find area bands like TUGG and Them Coulee Boys in the mix.

There are events all year long.

Although the true “festival” aspect of Mid West Music Fest occurs in April, they actually provide music throughout the year at various local venues. Hosting acts that often make the spring lineup, you can catch MWMF’s favorite bands collaborating and performing at establishments like The Court Above Main.

This isn’t a small production.

Now on its ninth year, this 4-day event has a combined 15 venues and 120 acts. It also incorporates both of the historic river communities of Winona and La Crosse. Over 3,000 music fans attended in 2016, and the event continues to grow.

It supports local business.

One of many cool parts of MWMF is that you get to explore and support local businesses while listening. In La Crosse, the performances have previously been at places like Turtle Stack Brewery, The Charmant Hotel and The Root Note. In Winona, bands have graced the stages of venues like Ed’s No Name Bar, Island City Brewing and Acoustic Cafe.

The Pump House Regional Arts Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin was founded in 1977. The Pump House frequently hosts performing artists in the 140-seat Dayton Theatre. Visual artists exhibit in two galleries, and art classes are also held at the Pump House. Before becoming an arts center the building served as a main water pumping station for the City of La Crosse, in the late 1800s. In 1913, the building was vacated when the city’s need exceeded its pumping capacity. The Pump House was renovated in 1977 with cooperation from the city and the volunteer efforts of many friends of the arts. The original angled wood ceiling was preserved and woodwork from the old La Crosse Post Office was utilized in the renovations. Since 1977, the city of La Crosse has authorized a long-term lease ensuring that the Pump House remains a regional arts center. For information regarding the Pump House, call (608) 785-1434 or visit our websitewww.thepumphouse.org.

Driftless Wisconsin Wine and Cheese Trail

Driftless Wisconsin Wine and Cheese Trail

Spring Event Weekend April 13, 14 & 15, 2018

Activities planned at 14 wineries and creameries throughout South Western Wisconsin

March 26, 2018 – Westby, WI – The Driftless Wisconsin Wine & Cheese Trail will hold its Spring Event weekend April 13, 14 & 15th, with special activities at each of fourteen businesses.  Launched in 2017, this collaboration between the state’s renowned dairy industry and its growing wine industry invites travelers to visit estate wineries and local creameries, tasting wine and sampling cheeses that have received national and international acclaim. The Trail is made possible through a matching Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin Grant through the WI-DATCP.

The Trail is comprised of these businesses located roughly between Madison and La Crosse. The route provides a tour of the stunning natural beauty of Southwest Wisconsin’s Driftless Area:

Baraboo Bluff Winery, Baraboo                                                Arena Cheese, Arena

Branches Winery, Westby                                                          Carr Valley Cheese, LaValle

Rock N Wool Winery, Poynette                                                Cedar Grove Cheese, Plain

Spurgeon Vineyards and Winery, Highland                            Organic Valley, Cashton Retail Store

Weggy Winery, Muscoda                                                           Pasture Pride Cheese Cashton

Wollersheim Winery & Distillery, Prairie du Sac                    Westby Creamery, Westby

Vernon Vineyards, Viroqua                                                        Nordic Creamery, Westby

Travelers can visit these locations year-round, but will receive a special welcome on the April event weekend.  Each business will be open from 10 – 5 pm each day and will offer activities such as tasting specials, discounts, educational programs, tours, etc.  According to Trail Director Therese Bergholz, owner, Branches Winery, “The Trail has become very popular because it gives wine and cheese lovers the chance to sample products, learn about wine and cheese pairings, and meet the wine makers and cheese makers.”  The goal of the Trail is to draw people from all over the Midwest to learn about the area’s locally grown/produced wine and cheese and experience agritourism in a delicious, fun, and personal way.

The featured cheese producers offer a wide variety of award winning cheeses including organic cheese and goat cheese. The wineries offer an outstanding range of high quality products – created from estate-grown cold-climate grapes and other fruits. Wines range from dry, oaked red wines to sweet white dessert wines, with many delicious options in between.

The Trail is a self-guided tour which draws customers year-round, not just on special event weekends. Trail event weekends are free to attend; normal tasting fees may apply. The Trail features a passport system where visitors receive a stamp when they make a purchase at each business. When complete, the passport can be redeemed for a VIP discount card. “Many people like to book a weekend trip to enjoy the Trail and explore numerous charming small town businesses and attractions,” Bergholz continued. “However, you can start the Trail at any business, at any time of year, and spend many fun days completing your passport.”  More information about the Trail including a map, details about the passport, and information about each participating business can be found at driftlesswinecheesetrail.com. The Fall Trail Event Weekend is scheduled for October 12, 13 & 14, 2018.

La Crosse Regional Airport Service Update

We have some great news. AA will be adding their fourth flight to ORD starting June 7th which is currently scheduled to stay after the summer months! With the up-gauge of two of those flights to CRJ-700’s with 70 seats we will see an overall increase of 40 seats per day during the summer and 90 seats over the winter. AA has continued to be more aggressive with their pricing which has driven load factors higher resulting in additional investment in service.

This is a critical time to ask for your continued support of flying local. By responding and filling this additional capacity we will continue to send the message to our airline partners that our community can use more service and more particularly more service to new hubs.

Thank you to our many LSE Leaders! These announcements are a result of your support. Additional capacity and frequency makes it easier for you to do business. If your company has not yet joined LSE Leaders please contact me directly and I would be happy to provide you a summary of the program.

Below is the tentative flight schedule for starting this June:

AA3057 06:04 Departure – 70 Seats
DL7422 06:20 Departure – 50 Seats
AA3073 10:00 Departure – 70 Seats
DL4294 11:20 Departure – 50 Seats
AA3850 14:50 Departure – 50 Seats
DL4295 15:56 Departure – 50 Seats
AA3143 18:22 Departure – 50 Seats

We are also still waiting for word on our SCASD grant for Eastbound service. If we are successful in obtaining the grant we will start working with our airline partners with the hopes of making the return of a Detroit flight a reality.
Thanks again for support your local airport.

Sincerely,

Clinton Torp
