The UW-La Crosse Symphony Orchestra performs their first concert of the spring on Sunday, March 3. The concert, entitled “World of Music,” begins at 3 p.m. in the Viterbo Fine Arts Center. The ensemble is conducted by Professor Martin I. Gaines.

The Symphony Orchestra features a program built on showcasing a variety of styles, cultures, and ideas that exist both inside and out of typical classical repertoire. One such piece will be Ukrainian-Australian composer Catherine Likhuta’s “From the Land of Tomorrow” which is a blend of classical, jazz, and Ukrainian folk tunes. The namesake for the orchestra’s concert comes from the feature piece: David Maslanka’s “World Music,” which was written “from a desire to embrace the whole world with musical sound,” per Maslanka. He wrote this piece in the belief that music making could release and alter violence, allowing one to positively transform the world. The program also features works from Bizet, Strauss Sr., and Delibes.

The concert is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. Visit uwlax.edu/vpa for more information.
