The UW-La Crosse Wind Ensemble perform their first concert of the Spring Semester on Sunday, March 3. The concert, “Prayer in Time of War,” begins at 1 p.m. in the Viterbo Fine Arts Center. The ensemble is conducted by Professor Martin I. Gaines.

The Wind Ensemble kicks off with “Fanfare Politeia” by Kimberly Archer – originally a commission by the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band which serves as an homage to the origin of America’s democracy. Following is the program’s title piece – Professor Gaine’s transcription of “Prayer in Time of War” by William Schumann. Professor Gaine’s choice of repertoire is a culmination of topics that touch on the pain and suffering caused by world conflict, telling stories of humanity’s tragic history. Given that theme, the ensemble will also perform Darius Milhuad’s World War II inspired “Suite Française” and close with a centenary performance of “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The concert is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. Visit uwlax.edu/vpa for more information.
