Elements of the La Crosse Region

The La Crosse region is an outdoor lover’s playground, offering something special in every season across all four elements of nature: earth, air, fire, and water. Whether you’re seeking breathtaking vistas, thrilling wildlife encounters, cozy campfires, or serene waterways, La Crosse delivers. Here’s a fun breakdown of just a few of the outdoor adventures waiting for you in this region.

Earth

The Driftless Region and its bluffs surrounding downtown La Crosse are a stunning remnant of glacial movement, and today they offer challenging hikes and unparalleled views. Most famously, Grandad Bluff stands over La Crosse, accessible by both trail and road. From the top, three states are in view, and it’s the best sunset spot for miles. If you only have time for one stop in La Crosse, make it Grandad Bluff!

Looking for a hike to experience the bluffs? Consider Apple Blossom Overlook in La Crescent, Minnesota, for an easy trail that offers stunning views from the blufftop. For a greater challenge, hike up Grandad Bluff via the Hixon Forest.

Air

Did you know the La Crosse region is prime bald eagle viewing? Not only do many of these magnificent creatures call the upper Mississippi River home year-round, but in winter, many more flock to the area. You’ll find them along the shores and particularly at the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The refuge is great bird watching all year, and in fall thousands of birds congregate here on their way south.

For more bald eagle experiences, visit the National Eagle Center in Wabash, Minnesota, a short drive from La Crosse. The center offers tours and a chance to meet their eagle ambassadors.

Fire

There’s nothing quite like a summer campfire, and there are plenty of camping options around the La Crosse region, whether tenting or RVing.

Neshonoc Lakeside Campground in West Salem is a perfect summer escape, with swimming, boating, an ice cream shop, and weekly events. For a quieter getaway, consider one of the campgrounds along the Mississippi River, like Goose Island or the Pettibone Resort. With so many spots on the water, you’re sure to find a great campsite in La Crosse.

Water

It’s already clear how central a role water plays in the La Crosse region, from beautiful campsites to wildlife viewing. But that’s just the beginning.

Thanks to the Mississippi River, its many tributaries, and the numerous lakes in the region, there is no shortage of boating opportunities. Rent a pontoon boat, canoe, or kayak from places like Schafer’s in Onalaska, or a houseboat from Fun ‘N the Sun in Alma.

If you’re looking for a different kind of water adventure, try fishing along the shore, cruising the Great River Road for a scenic summer drive, soaking up the sun at one of La Crosse’s beaches, or touring the Mississippi aboard a riverboat with La Crosse Queen Cruises.

After all these outdoor adventures, don’t forget some waterfront dining at places like Red Pines Bar and Grill or The Waterfront!
