Bird Banding Demonstrations

Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the refuge and the arrival of spring by joining us on Saturday May 18, 2024 for live bird banding and bird identification. Have you ever wondered how researchers band the little legs on song birds? Now is your chance to learn! As part of the 100th Anniversary Interpretive Series on the refuge, there will be FREE live bird banding demonstrations with a variety of experts on-site to help identify birds and explain how and why we band birds.

Where: the Shady Maple Interpretive Trail at Goose Island County Park near Stoddard, WI. After you turn into Goose Island County Park off of Hwy 35, it will be the first parking
lot on the left.

When: Saturday May 18, 2024, 7:00am – 11:00am

Birding is an interactive and immersive way to experience wildlife on the Refuge. The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is situated in world-class birding territory along the Mississippi Flyway, making it one of the most popular activities for locals and destination birders alike. Bring your binoculars, favorite field guide, and sense of curiosity.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is celebrating 100 years of conservation and has been part of YOUR public land and home to countless species of plants and animals for 100 years in 2024.
