The Perfect Itinerary for Visiting the La Crosse Region with Kids

Emily Krause, A Mom Explores

The Fall Itinerary for Families

Families in the Midwest who are looking for the perfect getaway need not look any further than the La Crosse Region. Located on the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota and characterized by soaring bluffs surrounding the Mississippi River, you couldn’t ask for a more scenic area to enjoy making memories with your kids.

My husband and I took our 4 young children and road tripped to La Crosse to enjoy the outdoors, the delicious food, and a little bit of history and culture. We were blown away by the beauty of the region and the warm hospitality that greeted us.

If you’re looking for fun things to do in La Crosse, WI with your family, I’ve got you covered! I’m sharing our family’s itinerary for the perfect weekend in La Crosse.

Friday

Kick off your weekend on Friday afternoon by checking into the chic and elegant Charmant Hotel

The Charmant | @thecharmantlc

The only boutique hotel in La Crosse is a former candy factory, so it’s only fitting that guests are greeted with Midwestern warmth and a handmade chocolate upon arrival. They even made sure each of our kids got one so no one felt left out! If you can’t get enough of the sweet treats, the Charmant Hotel has a Sweets Bar where you can purchase more to enjoy on-site or at home.

Once you’re settled into your room, you can venture down to the main floor for dinner at The Restaurant, the Charmant’s culinary pride, or order certain menu selections to your room.

If you’re set on enjoying the town on your first evening and the kids aren’t too tired, head a few blocks into Historic Downtown La Crosse for some Big Al’s Pizza.

Another option is to take your food to go so you can enjoy the sunset at Riverside Park overlooking the Mississippi River, as it’s just a block away from the Charmant. Kids can burn off the last of their energy before bed while the adults enjoy the view.

Saturday Morning

After a good night’s rest on the Euro-top mattresses of the Charmant, you’ll want to fuel up on breakfast and caffeine to prepare for the day of active sightseeing ahead. You can’t go wrong with the complimentary coffee and tea at the Charmant’s Parlor which also offers pastries and hot chocolate for the kids. Grab a table by the floor-to-ceiling windows and savor a slow start to your day.

Charmant Hotel | Emily Krause

An alternative option for breakfast would be The Breakfast Club & Pub, a perfect spot for fans of the 80s movie of the same name. Is there a more invigorating way to start the day than a full breakfast menu and 80s music?

Next, you’ll want to walk off your breakfast or finish sipping your coffee as you stroll through the Riverside International Friendship Gardens right down the road from The Charmant Hotel. This is a free public space where you can enjoy curated gardens representative of La Crosse’s sister cities in China, Norway, Ireland, Russia, France, and Germany. My kids loved guessing which country we were in before reading the signs!

Now it’s time to check out of your hotel, load up the car, and road trip along Apple Blossom Drive, a loop off of the Great River Road. This short scenic byway takes you into La Crescent, Minnesota for beautiful landscapes and myriad apple orchards. In fall you can pull over for apple stands on the side of the road, and in spring you’ll love inhaling the scent of apple blossoms.

Saturday Afternoon

By now the kids are probably starting to complain that they’re hungry, so it’s time to head back into La Crosse for lunch at Fayze’s. Located in Historic Downtown La Crosse, this family-friendly restaurant even has a kid’s corner with books and a hidden gnome door.

If you’re not ready for dessert just yet, this is the perfect time to drive just outside of the downtown area to visit Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine. But first make sure to stop for a picture with the world’s largest six pack at City Brewing Company on the way out!

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe | Emily Krause

Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine is a Catholic Church and pilgrimage site, but anyone is welcome to visit free of charge. The well-kept religious site tucked into the Mississippi River Valley is peaceful and incredibly scenic. Even the kids were filled with a sense of awe and respect at the chapels and devotional sites. When you reach the shrine at the top, the view is nothing short of spectacular. A cart is available to take people up and down the half-mile path in case your little ones start complaining that their legs are no longer working.

The Pearl | Emily Krause

Once you’re back in La Crosse, you can wander through historic downtown, or give those walking legs a break when you stop to enjoy a treat from The Pearl Ice Cream Parlor. This mom highly recommends the cappuccino oreo flavor!

Saturday Evening

We’re saving the best for last today! Drive to the top of Grandad Bluff and take in the stunning views when the light is best for photos. Bring some change so the kids can look through the viewfinders for a closer look at life down below. If you’re looking for a family photo to commemorate your trip, this is the spot to do it. The panoramic view of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa from the top of the bluff is second to none!

Grandad Bluff | Emily Krause

Since we have babies, toddlers, and little kids, we opted not to do any hiking on the bluff, but if you’re an outdoorsy family you can use the Hixon Forest Trails to get to Grandad Bluff Park.

You’ve likely worked up an appetite again, so make your way to Onalaska, WI to enjoy dinner at David Reay’s Modern Diner and Tavern. The welcoming atmosphere, the comfort food, and the view of Lake Onalaska from the 4 seasons patio will make this restaurant a hit with the whole family.

David Reay’s is the perfect spot to eat because it will get you nice and close to your second hotel, Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Onalaska. You’ll get to enjoy the feel of escaping to a remote cabin with all the amenities of a hotel. The rustic decor is soothing, and the family hotel rooms are incredibly spacious with log bunk beds, a large sitting area, and a kitchenette.

Stoney Creek Hotel | Emily Krause

I would highly recommend ending your day with a swim in the spacious and heated indoor/outdoor pool or soaking in the divinely warm whirlpool to ease your muscles after a day full of walking and activity.

Sunday Morning

Start the last day of your getaway with the complimentary continental breakfast that you can take to-go or enjoy in the breakfast room at Stoney Creek. Our kids loved the pancake maker that operates with the touch of a button.

Since Onalaska is known as the Sunfish Capital of the World, you can commemorate your time there by visiting Sunny the Sunfish, a 25-foot-long fiberglass fish sculpture perched on the edge of scenic Lake Onalaska.

Sunny the Sunfish | Emily Krause

Plan to stay for a bit and enjoy the view through the free binoculars located in the gazebo near Sunny, or walk some of the nearby trails.

If you have time and you’re wanting the kids to expend some energy before the drive home, stop by Norskedalen, a Norwegian nature and heritage center, or Hidden Hills, an outdoor property with a petting farm, obstacle course, and more, on the way out of town.

One thing is for sure: for outdoor fun and activities you can do with kids of any age, La Crosse is the place to go!

Fall Color Report 2022

Upper Hixon Forest Trail Review by YouTube Sensation, BKXC

YouTube sensation, Brian Kennedy of BKXC, recently visited La Crosse to test out the existing and soon-to-be-opened new mountain bike trails of the area.  His mission is to mountain bike the best trails in the world, showcase them on YouTube and “bring you along with me,” referring to his 330,000+ subscribers.  “But there’s more to it than that. I want to inspire you to get off the computer and go for a ride, make new friends and see new places. Life is for living.”  The California native had never been to Wisconsin but made it stop number 32 on his “50 State Shred” – a journey to ride the best trails in each state this year (2020).

Embarking on the trails of Upper Hixon, it took Brian no time to realize the incredible scenery of the Driftless Region. “This is a beautiful forest!  This terrain is so cool,” he remarked of the staggering timbers, underlying ferns, and karst topography.  Brian continued, “How can I go to so many different places and still have everything be really different.  It’s cool, it’s like it’s own place.  It’s own look, it’s own style.  It’s crazy,” referencing his trek across the United States and the vastly contrasting trails the Upper Hixon trails provide in comparison.

One trail, in particular, Vader, a double black diamond trail that features rock drops, rock berms, rock gardens, rock gaps, and rock steps, had Brian almost questioning the sanity of the trail developers and builders.  “I have never seen this type of trail work before:  pure chunk (rock), on purpose,” he stated as he overcame his doubts while he embraced and enjoyed its unique and rugged descent.

Amidst the many, woahs, wows, woos, and laughter, Brian quipped “BBWB, Built Before Wide Bars,” as his handlebars narrowly zipped past a plethora of trees as he made split second decisions on his descent of the windy, close-quartered trail.  He continued, “it’s cool though, definitely action packed!” “It’s amazing, it’s really cool,” he said when asked what he thought of the trails.  Brian referenced a good mix of old and new trail offerings “with the windy, the tough, the huffing and puffing, the super tight, the fun.  Then the new stuff was like, wow, this is awesome;  both technical and flow.  The new stuff is going to be amazing!  I think this place is definitely going to get on the map.”

Brian, a self-proclaimed mountain bike expert, rode over 17 miles of Driftless bliss on mainly expert level trails.  However, with over 100 miles of mixed-use trails in the La Crosse Region, he barely scratched the surface or was able to showcase the beginner and moderate trails.

Enjoy Brian’s full video of him shredding the Upper Hixon Trails:

Fall Fishing Feeding Frenzy: Guides of the La Crosse Region

Fishing in the fall can be like fishing with dynamite! The Mississippi River and its many tributaries out of La Crosse, as well as the incredible cold-water trout streams, are primed to deliver a memorable excursion filled with catching and maybe even your next wall-hanger.

Fish are aggressive as they heavily feed in preparation for the cold winter months ahead. Cooler water temperatures congregate the fish and dissipate recreational boat traffic, leaving more water for you to enjoy without dealing with the crowds.

Massive schools of predatory fish like bass (smallmouth and largemouth) and northern pike put on a fireworks show as they explode the water’s surface and send baitfish fleeing in all directions. Hordes of feisty walleyes congregate on wingdams and deeper holes in the main channel of the Mississippi River making them easier to target and provide plentiful rod-bending action. Giant, pan-sized bluegills and crappies can fill livewells in no time. Yellow perch, aptly referred to as “footballs” due to their bulbous
stature, are sure to score big in your on-the-water adventures as well as in your fryer. Heart-pounding fights and chess-like battles are plentiful with massive Mississippi River flathead catfish, typically in the 20 – 30-pound class but often weighing as much as 40, 50, or even more! Beautiful autumn colors aren’t only found on the foliage this time of year: brown and brook trout colors pop with vibrancy in the endless cold-water creeks and streams of the La Crosse Region.

Area guides have years of experience navigating the region’s bountiful waterways. Take the guesswork out and plan your trip with these experts to enjoy the most exciting fishing of the year and making life-long memories!

Mountain Biking: Then & Now in the La Crosse Region

Written by: Chris Stindt, Outdoor Recreation Alliance

As a relatively new mountain bike rider, it’s easy to take a lot for granted when you start riding.  You might assume that it just means riding on a dirt path and it doesn’t really matter what bike you use.  However, there is actually a lot more to riding mountain bikes!

Nearly 20 years ago, La Crosse began developing its first ‘real’ mountain bike trails.  Sure, there were some cow paths, and a lot of riding on land that wasn’t exactly official, but it was very, very different from today’s trails.  In 2001, a group of volunteers were given permission to develop trails in ‘Upper Hixon’ aptly named the Human Powered Trails.  These volunteers used hand tools to build some narrow paths, often called single-track in the mountain biking world.

And the bikes! It’s almost hard to imagine how simplistic and brutal historic mountain bikes were.  Today’s hybrids and road bikes would be better suited than the machines past riders used – rim brakes, lots of gears with no chain retention, limited and rudimentary suspension (usually only on the front of the bike), narrow wheels and tires, and in general, they were very heavy.

Today La Crosse has seen such an evolution that it is almost difficult to recognize.  The original trails are still present but have slowly been rehabilitated and updated with modern trail design. After a long hiatus, new trails have been added in leaps and bounds.  Professional trail building company, Rock Solid (a type of organization that wasn’t even in existence 20 years ago), created a series of trails themed after a galaxy, far, far away…. These downhill and family style trails rival anything in the Midwest; smooth, “flowy,” and fun for every type of rider!  And the bikes today have also undergone a significant evolution.  Only one ring in front, typically with 12 speeds in the rear, hydraulic disc brakes that could stop a car, advanced suspension technology on the front and rear of the bike, all while weighing significantly less – resulting in a more enjoyable experience.

La Crosse had a place on the mountain biking map very early on, but the pause in trail development over time started to leave the area behind.  However, the recent growth has set the La Crosse Region up as a premier mountain bike destination in the Midwest. The trail management group, ORA Trails, has executed countless volunteer hours maintaining trails and continuous work with the City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department to design and develop new trails. Numerous miles of new trails are weaved into the flora and fauna of Grandad Bluff in a way that enhances one of the Region’s most popular parks, to include access from neighborhoods at the foot of the bluff.  It’s exciting to see the history of mountain biking and only imagine what the future holds for the La Crosse Region!
