Perch on Ice with Jim Crowley Outdoors

Explore La Crosse was thrilled to invite Jim Crowley from Jim Crowley Outdoors back to the La Crosse Region – hitting the ice and catching lunkers including 13-inch perch! He visited right after mother nature dusted the water and bluffs with white powder; a stunning stage for some lively angling.

Perch On Ice

Written By: Jim Crowley
Nothing makes an angler feel more like a kid again than bringing a big perch up through the ice! This past week I was back fishing the La Crosse Region and watched numerous anglers, ages 8-80, catch big perch through the ice, smiling, laughing and just enjoying every minute. So, get a cup of coffee, sit back, relax and I’ll tell you, how you can do the same thing!

Regional Guides

La Crosse is very fortunate to have some outstanding local guides that know the area well. McCormick’s River Guide Service is one of my top two picks. Mike McCormick is an exceptional guide with years of guiding under his belt. He has a large air boat that takes clients and gear to areas you could not reach on your own.  Mike has a wealth of knowledge, and his crew is always working to put you on fish.  Adam Christianson at Adrenaline Angling is making a name for himself. He and his crew also use air boats and are very hard working; offering suggestions and sharing their knowledge. Both these guide services are extremely safe, dedicated and downright passionate about YOU catching fish. I highly recommend them both!!

Ice Fishing Tips

I keep my ice fishing gear simple. Two to three rods and reels spooled with 4lb line and small ice jigs in either gold or chartreuse colored heads with matching plastic bodies. A flasher/locator of your choice is also recommended. The big perch you will catch feed on small larva and tiny bluegills so your lures should match those. Make no mistake, you will also encounter big crappies and some incredible size bluegills, but the consistent size of these big perch will keep you coming back.

Local Recommendations

On this trip I stayed just a short, scenic drive from downtown La Crosse at the Best Western Plus in La Crescent, Minnesota. The property is very clean and comfortable with big beds, spacious rooms and a very friendly staff. A great restaurant nearby is Smitty’s Time Out Tavern. Try the Rueben Rolls and you can thank me later. Ice Fishing is on fire in the La Crosse Region right now, so trips may be limited. However, start planning on this for family and friends as this is just flat out fun! Find More Things to Do >

La Crosse Lunker League

Fishing is an excellent choice of outdoor activity to partake in if you happen to have some time to spend in the great outdoors in La Crosse. If you want to add an extra element of excitement to your fishing, you can join the La Crosse Lunker League

It’s simple. Catch a qualifying species in the La Crosse area, take some pictures for size and memories, release your fish, and submit your catch! You’ll be notified when your catch has been approved and you can see the awards you’ve gained. There are goals, milestones, and various awards to be won.

Lunker League is open to both residents and visitors. It’s a fun way to challenge yourself and possibly win some cool awards!

Anglers Paradise Among The Coulees
Anglers Paradise Among The Coulees

In the La Crosse Region, the Upper Mississippi sprawls well beyond its main channel, creating hundreds of tiny islands, channels, and deep pools harboring more species of fish than any other temperate-climate river in the world.

Whether you’re traveling with family or coming as a couple on a romantic getaway, there is truly something for everyone. Of the many great things to do and see in La Crosse, here are the highlights of my recent trip:

Where to Stay: Castle La Crosse

Staying at this award winning castle bed & breakfast is a unique experience that you will want to add to the top of your bucket list. This gem is located in the heart of La Crosse, and in 2019 it was voted “Most Welcoming Bed & Breakfast in America.” Castle La Crosse Bed & Breakfast is a beautifully maintained castle home from 1892 that has been turned into a luxury bed & breakfast. The rooms are unique, sparkling clean, and beautifully decorated. There are five unique rooms to choose from, and each one offers something different. However, the entire place can best be described as having a Victorian feel with a modern touch. The hosts are kind and welcoming, and the chef-prepared breakfast is sure to be one of the best breakfasts you will ever have.

La Crosse Region Ranked #2 Midwest City To See Fall Folliage

Written by: Rocket Homes

La Crosse Region in Wisconsin Named 2nd Best Places for Fall Foliage

La Crosse, Wisconsin is located beside the mighty Mississippi River and is known for its stunning natural views and breathtaking landscapes. The La Crosse Region has an abundance of protected state lands which are home to thousands of animal and plant species, towering buffs, streams, and many more natural areas to explore. Based off this and other factors, the La Crosse Region was ranked as the second best place to view fall foliage in the Midwest. The ranking was also based on Deciduous (trees with leaves that change color) coverage, percent of deciduous tree coverage, USDA plant hardiness zones, latitude, and elevation. The La Crosse region includes Wisconsin cities La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem, Town of Campbell/French Island, and one Minnesota city La Crescent.

The forests in La Crosse Region start to change from their green tones to brilliant orange, yellow, and red hues in late September. These colors are made even more dramatic when they reflect off the Mississippi River or coat the city’s historic bluffs. At the area’s nearby pumpkin patches, wineries, and apple orchards, tourists can get a close-up view of the vibrant leaves while engaging in various fall activities like navigating corn mazes, sipping seasonal beverages, and apple picking. So where are the best places to view the color change in the La Crosse region?

The wooded cliffs on the eastern outskirts of La Crosse Region are traversed by about 10 miles of hiking and multi-use paths. The trails are easily accessible from four designated parking locations. Connecting paths from Myrick Park or downtown La Crosse via Riverside Park allow for easy access by bike or on foot. The well-known Grandad Bluff Park, with its breathtaking views over the city and river valley, in addition to four recognized panoramas, are accessible from the Hixon Forest Trails. The Hixon Forest provides a prime opportunity to view this year’s fall foliage. With access to cliffs that overlook miles of forest dotted with deciduous trees (trees with leaves that change color). Veterans Memorial: A Salute To Those Who Serve

La Crosse is proud of the many memorials and sculptures in our communities that honor those who have fought for our country. We thank those in the community and beyond for the sacrifices made and Veterans Freedom Park assists in sharing our gratitude. This is the beginning of a series of memorial tributes in the La Crosse Region, stay tuned for more memorials in our region.

Veterans Freedom Park

The Veterans Freedom Park is a must-see while in La Crosse. A local veteran was inspired to create a memorial recognizing the “Forgotten War” to honor Korean War Veterans. Four additional memorials soon followed. The Korean Warm Memorial, WWI Memorial, U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, the Hmong and Lao Memorial, and the WWII Memorial bring honor and gratitude to all who have served. They now all stand in Veterans Freedom Park.

Korean memorial

Korean War Memorial

In this memorial, a large monument rests further along the path, featuring an outline of both North and South Korea. It reads: “Korean War Veterans Memorial, Forgotten No More.” The monument also features dates the war began and ended (6/25/1950 through 7/27/1953), the number of casualties (36,576), the number wounded (103,284), and the number of POWs returned to the United States (4,418).

wwI memorial

World War I Memorial

This memorial features a brick pathway, flanked by two brick pillars. At the center of the memorial stands a statue of a World War I soldier, complete with trench boots and a haversack. Additional pillars with inscriptions encircle the statue, and a low curved brick wall provides seating. Etched in the pillars are inscriptions of never surrendering and how each person had died, lived and is now loved in these fields.

nurse cadet memorial

U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps Memorial

The La Crosse-Rebecca Myrick Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) donated a plaque for this memorial. It reads: “In Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps 1943 to 1948, In Honor of All Who Served.” Other plaques tell the story of the Cadet Nurse Corps and applaud their role in the war. Members of the DAR can often be found weeding at the memorials.

Hmong memorial

Hmong-Lao Vietnam Veterans Memorial

This memorial was dedicated and created to inspire the Hmong youth and remind them of their history. And, to educate and remind Americans about the sacrifices the Hmong-Lao Veterans made. The statues stand vigilantly side-by-side atop a bold red base. A plaque describes our “moral responsibility to build a memorial in memory of those in the jungle who did not make it to the United States and those that did make it.”

wwII veterans memorial

World War II Memorial

This memorial is dedicated to World War II veterans. The statue, is made of fiberglass in the likeness of an infantry soldier. It stands on an eye-catching, vibrant blue platform. Six stone pillars encircle the statue, and four of the pillars are etched with the insignia of a branch of the Armed Forces: The United States Marine Corps, the United States Army, the United States Navy, and the United States Coast Guard.

Vietnam War Memorial

A newer addition to the Veterans Freedom Park is the Vietnam War Memorial. It includes a walk-way with a sculpture of combat boots and a flag and rifle leaning against them. Walking further into the area you’ll see a curved wall with the names of 1,239 military personnel killed in action engraved on it and the billowing flags in the background. Included is a plaque reading “We will never forget the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedoms during the Vietnam War. 1959 – 1975.” There are also benches to sit and reflect in this memorial.

Veterans Memorial Field Eagle

The stainless steel eagle, perched on top of five decorated steel arches and masonry columns, represents the national symbol, appearing on the Great Seal of the United States. This sculpture is intended to honor veterans of all five branches of the United States Military. The design is celebrative in nature and contains symbols which reflect both the monument’s status as a veterans’ memorial and the stadium’s function as a UW-La Crosse athletic facility.

Hixon Memorial

This art piece depicts a mother and her child resting upon a granite base. The sculpture is made of bronze.  Inscripted in the base of the statue is, “Who had not learned in hours of faith, the truth to flesh and sense unknown that life is ever Lord of Death and love can never lose its own.”  An old oak tree stands as a protective canopy over the sculpture. The cemetery in which the sculpture stands is itself a La Crosse Historic Site.
